2D submerged structure
An infinitely long cylindrical shell with a single deck, a simple idealised submarine, scatters an incident wave from an oblique direction. The deck is a thin plate and is excited in high order modes. The cylindrical shell also responds in a wavelength much shorter than the acoustic wavelength. Under these conditions the fluid loading has a predominately added mass effect on the structure. The pressure field is evanescent on the surface of the cylinder. The incident travelling wave is diffracted significantly at low frequencies, but as the frequency is increased a shadow zone emerges.
The animations below show the vibration of the structure and pressure field at various frequencies.
